What is Play Therapy and how can it help
Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate intervention that allows children understand confused feelings and upsetting events. Many people, especially children, do not readily have words to explain their circumstances, feelings and reasons behind their behaviour but can more easily do so through creative media and play. Play therapy can help children work through emotional, social, and behavioural difficulties along with helping to address family issues.
Play Therapists use play as the language through which they communicate with children. A major component of my work with children is through sandplay therapy. Sandplay therapy is “hand’s on" psychological work. It is a powerful therapeutic method that facilitates the psyches natural capacity for healing. Play therapy is used as a means of preventing or treating psychosocial disorders, and enabling children to achieve optimum growth and development.
What is Creative Therapy and how can it help teenagers
For older children and teenagers, Creative Therapy uses the creative process to help facilitate young people to connect with the self and with self-expression. It supports safe containment of the person’s experience and helps them to create meaning from them. Creative therapy offers a bridge when verbal dialogue may be difficult. It also supports clients to explore ways to expand and develop healthy coping strategies and resources, while enabling them to explore and develop new ways of relating to themselves and others. A major component of my work with young people is through sandplay therapy. Sandplay therapy is “hands on” psychological work and can be an accompaniment to talk therapy. It is a powerful therapeutic method that facilitates the psyches natural capacity for healing. The experience of engaging in creative therapy will be different for everyone and as such the process is tailored to the needs of the client.
