How can play or creative therapy help my child?

Research has shown play & creative therapy to be beneficial to every child and it can help them make sense of their world. Play is the natural language of a child that enables complex thoughts and feelings, ideas and perceptions be brought in to focus. Through play, children can make sense of their past and cope better with their future. Play therapy provides a child with emotional support while they learn more about their thoughts and feelings.

How many sessions does my child need?

The number of play therapy sessions required will vary for each child and this will be discussed at reviews. Allow at least 6-8 sessions with the therapist before this review takes place whereby the therapist will discuss your child’s progress with you. It is important to remember that a child will work through their difficulties at their own pace and the therapist will respect how each child responds to the process. Often it may take many weeks to see noticeable changes and behaviours may become more prominent as your child learns new ways of thinking, understanding, and behaving. Sessions are usually weekly and last between 30 and 50 minutes. Research suggests that it takes an average of 20 sessions to resolve the problems of a typical child referred for treatment. However, this can be longer or shorter depending on the individual child’s process.

What happens during the initial consultation?

The initial consultation takes place between the parents or Guardians and the therapist as these are the most important adults in the child’s life. Parents play a vital role in the assessment, effective treatment [planning and successful outcomes for their child and so it makes sense for them to be actively included in their child’s process. The aim of this initial meeting is for the therapist to build a picture of your child’s world and to assess their needs. The consultation also gives parents an opportunity to find out more about the play therapist and the play therapy process.

Is there a place where I can wait for my child?

Parents are required to stay within the premises for the duration of the session and there is a waiting room available for this purpose.
